Calcium citrate – the better format

Out of all dietary supplements, Calcium is one of the oldest. It is a vital nutrient and is used by the body for many functions.  But you must have the correct format otherwise your body will not absorb it.  Many supplement companies don’t.  They use cheap alternatives.

What does Calcium Do?

Calcium is used by every cell in the human body for a countless number of cellular processes.  For example, the nervous system would not work without calcium due to a common ion channel through which calcium flows. Without calcium, there’d be nothing to flow through and those calcium channels and nerve fibres would not be able to fire impulses properly.

Some of calcium’s other known health effects include:

  1. Calcium is needed for the proper function of digestive enzymes and is
  2. needed for normal blood clotting and
  3. Calcium helps the body to properly release energy from food and is
  4. needed for normal muscle function.
  5. Calcium has a role in the process of cell division and specialisation and is
  6. needed for bone health.
  7. Calcium is needed for healthy teeth.

All brands promise that their products contain the highest quality ingredients and the best bioavailability. Unfortunately, that’s not always true. (bioavailability means how well your body can absorb a nutrient from your diet).

Calcium Citrate v Carbonate

At sense*, we believe in high quality ingredients. The calcium used in our sense* for joint & bone and sense* for gut health products is calcium citrate.

The fact that calcium citrate dissolves easily in water and allows the calcium to quickly separate from the citrate and be absorbed by the body means that calcium citrate has a high bioavailability.

Some brands promise the best form of calcium and actually use forms like calcium carbonate which has a far lower bioavailability. This means that you need to take much much more of it to absorb the same amount of calcium.  But the other stuff they contain can also be harmful.

These are the sorts of details that we pay attention to here at sense*and that’s why we call it smart nutrition! Visit our shop and join us in our crusade for better supplements!
